Our Family / Our Heritage

Althams was established in 1856 by Thomas Altham, who opened our families first butchers shop on Queen Street, in Morecambe, Lancashire.

Our dedication to ensure quality produce and service has led Althams to become one of the oldest and largest, independent family-owned butchers in the country and today the business is run by great-great-grandsons of Thomas, James and Rick.

James joined the butchery business full time in 1994 and became Managing Director in 2000, after his father decided to dedicate more time to his farms.

Rick begun working at Althams at the age of 17 on the shop floor and within 12 months he decided to return to the heart of the farming industry to improve on the knowledge he already had from his childhood. Rick then returned to the butchery business full time as Operations Manager in his early twenties.

Both James and Rick worked hard learning how the business ran in every department, through hard work and dedication they have driven the business in one direction only, and with the continuous help and valued support from every team player, they have managed to get the company to where it is today.

Many of our staff throughout the business have been with us for decades, Gordon on of our long serving butchers even remembering Rick’s first day on the job!

At Althams, we value our team and aspire for them to grow with us, challenging them and encouraging them to excel in all areas.

We support our team through thick-and-thin and this is why we have such a valuable, knowledgeable workforce that stands by us year-in, year-out, inevitably giving us our unique depth of knowledge that has been passed through generations to help you find exactly what you are looking for.

From then, till now — Quality through and through

Have a look through our past, from Thomas Altham, the great grandfather of Altham’s Butchers, right through to James and Rick, keeping Althams’ incredible heritage and taking it out further than it has been before.

“Pull hard my lads , we'll win the day!”

With this moniker, Mrs. J.C. Altham set the heartbeat for the generations to come the day she sent the local errand boys racing up the hill and back.

And from that day on, Althams continues to show the true spirit, grit and determination that generations have shown in years past; to not settle for 'OK' or average, but to glean on a wealth of skill and knowledge that no others can claim, providing the absolute best to chefs, restaurants and companies across the country.

At Althams, we continue to thrive with our rich, truly incredible heritage and a remarkable future ahead. As ever, we are a family full of remarkable people and exciting innovations and opportunities will continue our great legacy.
